In the UCLA Department of Anesthesiology, Nurse Anesthetists are an integral part of the anesthesia care team.  UCLA nurse anesthetists practice in various clinical settings within the medical center including the Center for Health Sciences, Ambulatory Surgery Center, Jules Stein Eye Institute, and Santa Monica Hospital.

 

UCLA is a clinical training site for both the USC and Kaiser Permanente Nurse Anesthesia Programs.  Students work closely with CRNA staff and faculty anesthesiologists in the ambulatory setting to gain outpatient experience.

 

In addition to their clinical and educational expertise, the CRNA group added research to their list of activities and accomplishments in 2006.  Charles Griffis, PhD Nursing is currently engaged in an NIH-funded post-doctoral study.  Dr. Griffis supervised nurse anesthesia students from the USC Keck School of Medicine in partial satisfaction of their Nurse Anesthesia Master’s requirement.  Senior staff anesthetists also have the opportunity to assist with the project. 

Opportunities abroad exist in the Department as well.  In 2005, Erica Zima, MSN, CRNA, traveled to Eritrea, Africa in a volunteer mission sponsored by Health Volunteers Overseas.
