Policy on Supervision of Fellows/Residents
All patient care rendered by fellows/residents is supervised by qualified faculty.
Fellow/residents are provided with rapid, reliable systems for communicating with supervising faculty by alpha-numeric pager and overhead page.
Faculty schedules are structured to provide fellows/residents with continuous supervision and consultation at any of seven care sites: (a) ASC at 200 Medical Plaza (Implantation of spinal cord stimulators and pumps), (b) CHS ORs (Implantation of spinal cord stimulators and pumps), (c) In-house Acute Pain Services or Pain Consultation services at CHS or Santa Monica, (d) Outpatient chronic pain services at the 16 th Street Pain Center, (e) The Fluoro Suite within Santa Monica Hospital, and (f) Pasadena Rehabilitation Institute. Supervision shall not vary substantially with the time of day or day of the week:
There is 1 faculty member on Acute Pain and CHS consultation service at all times.
There is 1 faculty member at the 16 th Street outpatient office at all times care is rendered
There is 1 faculty member at the fluoro suite in Santa Monica Hospital at all times care is rendered.
There is an attending physician at Pasadena Rehabilitation Institute at all times.
There is 1 faculty member on call for Acute Pain/CHS consults and another faculty member on call for Santa Monica Pain consults at all times.
Fellows/residents will first evaluate a patient. They will obtain a pertinent history, perform a physical examination, and develop a differential diagnosis and a plan of care. They will then present these findings to the attending physician. The attending will physically see the patient, obtain further history, perform appropriate physical diagnosis, and refine the assessment and plan.
For procedural services, an attending will always be present throughout the entire duration of a procedure and supervise the entire procedure.
