UCLA DEPARTMENT OF ANESTHESIOLOGY

Policy on Supervision of Residents

All patient care is supervised by qualified faculty.   The UCLA Department of Anesthesiology chair will approve the teaching staff at Westwood and Santa Monica.  The Chair of each affiliate will select and ensure the faculty at their facility is qualified.

The faculty will provide education, training, and experience in an atmosphere of mutual respect between instructor and resident so that residents will be stimulated and prepared to apply acquired knowledge and skills independently.   The faculty will provide an environment that promotes the acquisition of the knowledge, skills, clinical judgment, and attitudes essential to the practice of anesthesiology.

The faculty will also provide guidance and counseling in interpersonal skill, effective communication, and professionalism.  The faculty will work toward ensuring that the residents assume responsibility and act responsibly and with integrity; demonstrate a commitment to excellence and ethical principles of clinical care, including confidentiality of patient information, informed consent, and business practices; demonstrate respect and regard for the needs of patients and society that supercedes self-interest; and work effectively as a member of a health-care team or other professional group.

At UCLA Westwood and Santa Monica residents are provided with rapid, reliable systems for communicating with supervising faculty by alpha-numeric pager, overhead page and/or a direct mobile phone.
