Policy on Back-Up Support System for Residents
If unexpected circumstances create resident fatigue sufficient to jeopardize patient care or when patient care responsibilities are unusually difficult or prolonged, the following back-up system may be used.
1. Residents on A or B call may be required to take in-house call not to exceed 24 hours and with the next 24 hours free from clinical responsibility.
2. Residents on-call from home at Santa Monica hospital may be required to report for patient care at the Westwood hospital at the discretion of the first call faculty for both hospitals. In-house call will not exceed 24-hours and will be followed by 24 hours free from clinical responsibility.
3. Cardiac residents scheduled to take call from home may be required to take in-house call at the Westwood hospital at the discretion of the first call Westwood faculty and the first call cardiac faculty. In-house call will not exceed 24-hours and will be followed by 24 hours free from clinical responsibility.
4. During the week, the resident on K-call (3pm - 11pm shift) may be required to take in-house call extending to 7am. This will be followed by a 10 hour time period before reporting back to duty at the Westwood hospital. The K-call may also be required for patient care at Santa Monica hospital.
5. The C-2 through C-8 on-call faculty may be required to relieve residents of clinical duties.
