The Department of Anesthesiology has three elective courses to choose from. The 4th year UCLA medical students, as well as potential applicants to the anesthesiology residency program, rotate through the department routinely and a specific medical student lecture series has been set up to meet the needs of the students. UCLA is one of the largest Anesthesia programs in the western United States, performing approximately 50,000 anesthetics per year. Areas of specialization include anesthesia for general surgery, vascular surgery, neurosurgery, cardiac surgery, liver transplantation, orthopedics, ENT, OB-GYN, urology, ophthalmology, and pediatric surgery. Between seventy-five and one hundred third- and fourth-year medical students complete this elective each year. Additionally, this elective course is available to residents from Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, Oral Surgery, Dentistry and other disciplines. This course emphasizes the introduction of basic concepts in anesthesia and critical care for the non-anesthesiologist. Learning objectives include:
2) Airway management (control of airway with mask, tracheal intubation). 3) Monitoring patients’ ECG, arterial line, CVP, Swan-Ganz catheter, and esophageal stethoscope. 4) Establishing lines, e.g. IV, CVP, Swan-Ganz catheter, and arterial line. 5) Intraoperative fluid management 6) Pharmacology of anesthetic drugs, i.e. IV agents, inhalation agents, and muscle relaxants. 7) Postop recovery room management with fluid, ventilation, and reversal of anesthetic.
