3rd Year Anesthesiology Rotation

Course Number: SU019 and SU0012-C

As a part of the core curriculum during the third year at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, all medical students are given the opportunity to spend two of the twelve weeks during their surgery clerkship rotating through the UCLA Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine. During this time, which is spent exclusively at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and not at other affiliated medical institutions, each third year medical student will be exposed to the perioperative medical care that anesthesiologists provide in concert with their surgical and intensivist colleagues, discussing all aspects of clinical patient care as they relate to preoperative assessment, intraoperative management, and postoperative care. Students also take one overnight call per week to take advantage of education opportunities available in the evening that typically vary throughout the day.

Over the course of the two weeks, each student will become familiar with the basic principles and techniques of general anesthesia, intravenous and inhalational agent pharmacology, invasive monitoring, and fluid resuscitation. Specific learning objectives include but are not limited to the following:

  1. Development of an individualized anesthetic plan
  2. Options and alternatives for airway management
  3. Assessment of hypoxemia, hypercarbia, and acid-base status
  4. How to choose induction and maintenance agents (both intravenous and inhalational)
  5. Regional anesthesia selection (i.e., spinal versus epidural, peripheral nerve blocks, etc.)
  6. Vital sign abnormalities
  7. ACLS basics
  8. Pain management

Additionally, participation in the following activities is both expected and encouraged, as appropriate:

  1. Placement of routine monitors
  2. Pre-oxygenation and mask ventilation
  3. Oral airway and LMA insertion
  4. Direct laryngoscopy and intubation
  5. Establishment of intravenous access
  6. Arterial and central venous line insertion
  7. Fiberoptic intubation
  8. Spinal and/or epidural anesthetics
