This marks the fourth year of the exchange rotation between UCLA and the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine (SAHZU). I was very glad to have this opportunity to participate in anesthesia care in a foreign system and immerse myself in a different culture.

When Dr. Swati Patel, our department pediatric chief, approached me to join her on a mission to India with Medical Missions for Children (www.mmfc.org), I literally jumped at the opportunity. During my last year of residency at UCLA, I had the opportunity to travel to Arequipa, Peru.

An International Elective in China

First started in 2012, UCLA residents have the opportunity to travel to Hangzhou, China to rotate at the Second Affiliated Hospital Zhejiang University School of Medicine (SAHZU). Located in a large metropolitan area with over 3 million people, residents spend 4 weeks with the Department of Anesthesiology as an active member of the anesthesia team.

Dr. Xia Visits the Second Affiliated Hospital of ZUCM in Hangzhou, China

Victor Xia, MD, Associate Professor of the UCLA Department of Anesthesiology, visited the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University College of Medicine (ZUCM) in Hangzhou, China during one of the latest faculty exchanges between the Department of Anesthesiology of UCLA and the Department of Anesthesiology of the Second Affiliated Hospital of ZUCM.

Thao Hoang traveled to Punta Gorda, Belize with the non-profit organization Healing the Children Northeast to provide cleft lip/palate and other plastic reconstructive surgeries to the under-served children in the region.

Dr. Fang joined a medical team from the San Gabriel Valley, north of Los Angeles, and traveled to Yushu County, Qinghai Province, China, which was severely damaged by a 7.1 earthquake in 2010

Dr. Wray joined LIGA international on a volunteer medical mission to Sinaloa, Mexico. Dr. Wray and the other LIGA volunteers provided care for 769 patients over a single weekend.

Dr. Wald goes to Rwanda

Dr. Wald joined the Medical Missions for Children (MMFC) to serve as part of a team for cleft lip repair in the small village of Gitwe, Rwanda. Dr. Wald and his colleagues were able to perform almost 40 procedures during the scheduled week with a team consisting of medical personnel from Boston, New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Dr. Zadeh Provides Medical Aid in Haiti

Dr. Bita Zadeh boarded the USNS Comfort to provide medical aid to the earthquake victims in Haiti as part of a disaster relief effort. Dr. Zadeh's care brought relief to many who suffered from the tragic 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck the Haitian capital on January 12, 2010.

Dr. Keyes helps with Operation Smile in Vijaywanda, India

In December 2008, Dr. Mary Keyes and colleagues from the United States, in collaboration with local anesthesiologists, provided anesthesia care for 115 children undergoing cleft lip and palate repair during a 9-day mission in Vijaywanda, India that was supported by Operation Smile.

Dr. Keyes joined team of specialists which included plastic surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, dentists, child life specialists, pediatricians, speech pathologists, medical record staff and medical photographers went to Qujing, China in Yunnan Province in September, 2006 to work on children with cleft lips and palates.

Dr. Kianusch Kiai and Dr. Swati Patel accompanied Medical Missions for Children for its first trip to Tanzania. During this 10 day trip, volunteers operated on 36 patients.

Victor Duval, M.D. and Edna Ma, M.D. attend the 33rd annual Eye, Dental, Medical and Surgical Camp in Bidada, Kutch, India

Victor Duval, M.D. and Edna Ma, M.D. (third year resident) joined a team of 500 medical experts in 25 specialties from India and abroad, including the United States, to volunteer their expertise in the 33rd annual Eye, Dental, Medical and Surgical Camp which takes place for over 20 days each January in Bidada, Kutch, India.
