Obstetric Anesthesiology Fellowship

Program Overview

The Obstetric Anesthesiology Fellowship at UCLA is a one-year program that is offered to interested graduating anesthesia residents, board-eligible anesthesiologists, and board-certified anesthesiologists. Applicants must be able to obtain a California medical license prior to starting and would be appointed as clinical instructors. The fellowship can be structured to match the format and requirements of an ACGME-accredited program, but it is currently non-ACGME accredited to allow for flexibility in scheduling, and to offer significant additional income opportunities in the Main OR, if desired. Work in the Main OR (as a clinical instructor) could be incorporated into your fellowship work schedule, separate from moonlighting roles which would require time outside your fellowship hours. As an integral member of the obstetric anesthesia team, fellows will be exposed to several different hospital settings and a variety of maternal and fetal high-risk deliveries.

One of the main objectives of the obstetric anesthesia fellowship is to provide a foundation for effective collaboration in a multidisciplinary obstetric setting. Fellows will be active participants of evaluating high-risk obstetric patients and implementing an appropriate anesthetic plan. Two-week clinical fellowship rotations in maternal-fetal medicine and the neonatal intensive care unit will allow fellows to acquire the clinical expertise that is essential for management of obstetric patients in a multidisciplinary environment.

Education for clinical fellows will include formal didactics, journal club, and simulation courses. Clinical teaching will take place at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, one of our affiliated teaching hospitals. It is strongly encouraged that fellows become involved in clinical or basic science research that is facilitated through teaching faculty. Up to three months of protected non-clinical time can be allotted for this purpose.
